Accessibility is not a marginal issue – it affects us all: 10% of people are dependent on it, 40% need it in certain situations and 100% benefit from it. With the new Accessibility Reinforcement Act (BFSG)<\/strong>, which comes into force on June 28, 2025<\/strong>, barrier-free digital services will become mandatory – also for the hotel industry. But what does this mean for hotels in concrete terms? What requirements will websites and booking routes have to meet in future – and what is the best way to implement them? <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>

What does the BFSG mean for hotels?<\/h2>\n<\/div><\/div>
\n

Hotels that offer online bookable offers, digital guest services or services on their website are obliged to make these accessible<\/strong>. This includes: <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>

\n
    \n
  • the hotel website<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/div>\n\n
    \n
  • the online booking mask<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/div>\n\n
    \n
  • the voucher sale<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/div>\n\n
    \n
  • the payment process<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/div>\n\n
    \n
  • Customer service via chat or form<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/div>\n\n
    \n
  • and even the cookie banner<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/div><\/ul>\n<\/div>
    \n

    Micro-enterprises <\/strong>with fewer than 10 employees and an annual turnover of less than EUR 2 million are generally exempt – unless <\/strong>barrier-free implementation is possible without a disproportionate burden.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>

    What do hotels need to do to be barrier-free?<\/h2>\n<\/div><\/div>

    1. structured, clearly understandable content<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>

      \n
    • Use clear page layouts<\/strong> with a logical structure.<\/li>\n<\/div>\n\n
      \n
    • Avoid technical jargon <\/strong>or unnecessarily complex formulations.<\/li>\n<\/div>\n\n
      \n
    • Use easy-to-understand language<\/strong>, especially for descriptions, terms and conditions, payment terms or FAQs.<\/li>\n<\/div><\/ul>\n<\/div>
      \n

      2. provide alternative content<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>

      \n
        \n
      • Alt texts for images<\/strong> – so that guests with visual impairments can also understand what is being shown.<\/li>\n<\/div>\n\n
        \n
      • Transcripts and subtitles<\/strong> for videos – particularly relevant for image videos or instructions.<\/li>\n<\/div>\n\n
        \n
      • Text descriptions for icons and symbols<\/strong> – buttons such as \u201cTo booking\u201d should also be labeled.<\/li>\n<\/div><\/ul>\n<\/div>

        3. barrier-free navigation and control<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>

        • The website and booking screen must be fully operable with the keyboard.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/div>\n\n
          \n
        • Contrasts and font sizes<\/strong> must also be suitable for people with visual impairments.<\/li>\n<\/div>\n\n
          \n
        • No flickering content or automatically moving elements – they can trigger epileptic seizures or discomfort.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/div><\/ul>\n<\/div>

          4 Technical implementation and compatibility<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>

            \n
          • Your website must be compatible with screen readers<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/div>\n\n
            \n
          • HTML structures should be semantically correct<\/strong> (e.g. clear heading hierarchy).<\/li>\n<\/div>\n\n
            \n
          • Forms (e.g. booking fields, contact forms) should be labeled and accessible.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/div><\/ul>\n<\/div>

            5. document accessibility<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>

            • Hotels should provide a statement on digital accessibility <\/strong>(e.g. in the footer) describing which measures have been implemented and where there is still room for improvement.<\/li>\n<\/div><\/ul>\n<\/div>

              A feedback mechanism<\/strong> should also be set up so that users can report problems.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>
